Filling the gaps in the Mystery Boxes

Adding a box of fourteen colors to fill in the spectrum of my Terry Ludwig Mystery Boxes.

I previously wrote about ordering two boxes of ‘Mystery Box’ pastels - a.k.a. factory seconds - from Terry Ludwig Pastels. I eventually ordered fourteen additional pastels to fill in the gaps in the color spectrum. Why fourteen? Well, I wanted the box to match the same size as the boxes of seconds. I live in a desert region, and that definitely drove the selection of additional colors.

I’ve successfully used this collection of forty-two pastels many times. It may not have the exact shade I want, but the resulting pastel paintings are vibrant and the finished paintings harmonize well together.

Individual sticks must be ordered directly from Terry Ludwig. However sets of Terry Ludwig pastels are available through many sources.

My missing colors as I would describe them…

G010 - Grassy yellow green
Y038 - Medium yellow green
B010 - Saturated blue
Y190 - An unsaturated orange
G180 - Pale bluish-green
A080 - Saffron orange
G570 - Midnight green
Y036 - Pale yellow with a tinge of green
G390 - Olive green
Y030 - THE yellow, saturated
G640 - Dark green
A070 - Yellow orange
Y074 - Pale brown
B300 - Almost navy blue

Would I add more to this collection? I occasionally use a stick or two from a limited edition Candybox set (a set of pastel-colored pastels). I think keeping this collection limited has worked well for me. I have larger sets of pastels but recently tend to grab the smaller sets.
